I. Definitions of Eco-Friendly Boards and Solid Wood Boards

1. Eco-Friendly Boards

Eco-Friendly Boards (also known as Melamine Boards or Paint-Free Boards) are man-made composite boards made from particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), or blockboard, with one or more layers of melamine-impregnated paper hot-pressed onto the surface. Melamine-impregnated paper is made by impregnating decorative paper in a melamine resin adhesive and curing it under high temperature and pressure. It is wear-resistant, moisture-proof, and highly decorative. Eco-Friendly Boards, often called "Paint-Free Boards," require no additional painting and are widely used in furniture, cabinets, and interior decoration.

2. Solid Wood Boards

Solid wood boards are made directly from natural wood, typically by sawing, splicing, or finger-joining, preserving the wood's natural grain and characteristics. Solid wood boards can be categorized as solid boards (cut from a single piece of wood) or jointed boards (joined from multiple pieces of wood). Common wood species include oak, pine, walnut, and beech, and are widely used in high-end furniture, flooring, and interior decoration.

II. The Difference Between Eco-Friendly Boards and Solid Wood Boards

1. Materials and Structure

• Eco-Friendly Boards: Made from particleboard, MDF, or blockboard, they are considered man-made boards with a melamine finish. The base material is made of sawdust, wood fiber, or wood chips bonded together with adhesives, resulting in a non-natural internal structure.

• Solid Wood Boards: Processed directly from natural wood, they retain the natural fiber structure of the wood, eliminating the need for extensive adhesives and resulting in a material closer to its natural state.

2. Environmental Performance

• Eco-Friendly Boards: Due to the use of adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde resin, they may release formaldehyde. According to the "Limits of Formaldehyde Emission from Man-Made Boards and Their Products for Interior Decoration and Renovation" (GB 18580-2017), formaldehyde emissions from eco-friendly boards must be controlled within E1 (≤1.5 mg/L) or E0 (≤0.5 mg/L). Low-end eco-friendly boards may pose a risk of exceeding the standard for formaldehyde.

• Solid Wood Boards: Generally, they do not require extensive adhesives, resulting in extremely low formaldehyde emissions and greater environmental performance. However, a small amount of adhesive may be used to join solid wood boards, so attention should be paid to the quality of the glue.

3. Physical Properties

Eco-friendly Board:

• Advantages: The surface is wear-resistant, scratch-resistant, and moisture-resistant, making it suitable for humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms. It offers good dimensional stability and resists deformation.

• Disadvantages: The base material is relatively weak (such as particleboard), resulting in limited load-bearing capacity and weak nail holding power, making it prone to loosening after repeated assembly and disassembly.

Solid Wood Board:

• Advantages: High strength and strong nail holding power, making it suitable for load-bearing furniture. It has a beautiful natural texture and a soft touch.

• Disadvantages: It is susceptible to environmental humidity and may crack or warp, requiring regular maintenance (such as painting or waxing).

4. Appearance and Decorative Features

• Eco-friendly Board: The melamine finish can be used to simulate a variety of patterns, including wood grain, stone grain, and fabric grain, with a wide selection of colors and textures. The surface is smooth and even, eliminating the need for additional painting.

• Solid wood boards: Retain the natural wood grain and offer a premium feel, but color and texture are limited by the wood species, requiring paint or varnish to adjust the appearance.

5. Cost and Price

• Eco-friendly boards: Low production costs, typically priced between 100 and 300 yuan per square meter, making them suitable for renovation projects with limited budgets.

• Solid wood boards: Because they use natural wood, they are more expensive. Ordinary solid wood boards cost 300 to 800 yuan per square meter, while high-end woods (such as red oak and walnut) can cost over 1,000 yuan.

6. Processing and Installation

• Eco-friendly boards: Easy to process, with simple cutting and edge banding, and efficient installation, making them suitable for large-scale production and quick renovations.

• Solid wood boards: Processing is more challenging, requiring consideration of wood grain direction and moisture control, resulting in a longer installation period.
