Paulownia wood, not referring to the parasol tree,is the wood of the paulownia tree. Some cultures consider paulownia wood a precious material for furniture, conducting in-depth research and utilization of it.Long ago, people were enthusiastic about using paulownia wood to make furniture, making paulownia furniture consistently sought after in the market and synonymous with high-end furniture.
About Paulownia
Paulownia,a tree species native to China,is now widely distributed globally, including Vietnam,Japan, and various parts of Asia.In my country, there are many varieties of paulownia, such as the Paulownia tomentosa and Paulownia laurentii, and its cultivation and utilization have a long history, even being recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica. It grows rapidly, has excellent quality, and is widely used.
The Diverse Applications of Paulownia Wood
Paulownia wood not only has straight and beautiful grain, but after fine planing, its surface exhibits a silky luster, accompanied by a strong three-dimensional texture. This wood has excellent stability, uniform structure,is easy to process, and planes effortlessly, resulting in superior craftsmanship.More notably, paulownia wood possesses excellent moisture-proof and insect-proof properties,is not easily flammable, and is readily colored and painted.Furthermore, its acoustic properties are outstanding, with strong resonance and stable tone unaffected by climate. For these reasons, paulownia has become an ideal choice for musical instrument making, earning it the nickname qintong.
Beyond its applications in furniture and musical instrument making, paulownia also plays a vital role in military and industrial fields. Its lightweight,moisture-proof,and non-flammable properties make it ideal for aircraft models, precision instrument casings, and passenger ship and bus linings.Simultaneously, paulownia is a high-quality material for packaging boxes used in aviation and water transport. In addition, its high cellulose content and light-colored texture make paulownia an important raw material for the paper industry.
From boxes used to hold the umbilical cord at birth to dowries,high-end gift boxes for relatives and friends, jewelry boxes, and boxes for calligraphy and paintings by famous artists, paulownia wood is ingeniously utilized in all these applications.
The processing of all-paulownia furniture is extremely rigorous. From material selection to the finished product, every step is meticulously crafted.Flawless materials and radial planks with straight grain and fine growth rings are the foundation for creating high-quality all-paulownia furniture.More upscale furniture even requires at least four growth rings per centimeter;the more rings, the higher the value. The joints must fit perfectly, and the surface finishing process is unique.
In the finishing process, first, the surface is sanded smooth with sandpaper along the grain, then a light yellow dye is applied. After the dye dries completely, one or two coats of water-soluble plant dye are applied, followed by a coat of paraffin wax to enhance the gloss. Finally, using a brush made of hard grass roots, the wood is pressed and polished along the grain, creating grooves in the softer parts of the wood's growth rings and thus a distinct three-dimensional effect.Paulownia furniture crafted with this meticulous process possesses a soft and elegant color, commanding a high price and becoming an art form in itself.
